Abuse in any form is an assault to one’s sense of safety and security. Victims of abuse develop a distorted sense of fear and disproportionate distrust of self and others. These fears fuel myriad self-destructive behaviors. Many incest victims suffer morbid obesity, while some manifest self-mutilation. Often victims self-sabotage their careers, while some delve in successive abusive marriages. Other self-betraying behaviors may include alcoholism, tobacco abuse, chemical dependency, disordered eating, anger, anxiety and even depression.
